Teaching Assistantships

A teaching assistant (TA) in the Department of Mathematical Sciences has a teaching/tutoring load of 12 credit hours per year. Typically, a TA is the instructor of record for one or two courses per term. Meaning, the TA is the teacher for the course, running all class meetings, designing and grading assignments, exams, quizzes, projects, etc., and assigning grades. Most  courses taught by TAs have a faculty coordinator or mentor. The courses typically taught by TAs include: college algebra (4 credit hours), mathematics and liberal arts (3 credit hours), mathematics for elementary school teachers (3 credit hours), and basic statistics (3 credit hours). Some opportunities to teach more advanced undergraduate courses exist, too.

During the 2024-2025 academic year, the stipend for a TA with a Master's degree was $18,889. In addition, TAs receive a tuition waiver for up to 9 credits a semester, the typical course load for graduate students in our PhD program; however, insurance and most student fees are the responsibility of the student.

Each TA is provided with office space and access to a shared computer, printer, and copy machine.

Summer Support

Summer support of up to $4500 is available for students working on their dissertation research. In addition, a limited pool of funds is available at the college level for summer support for students working on other program related projects. In recent years, this summer support has averaged $2500-$3000 for about 120 hours of work.

Grant Work

Students supported by active grants in the department may spend part to all of their work time working on the grant. In addition, many small grants, fellowships, and scholarships are available from federal, state, private, and university sources that provide $500 to $3000 per year. Graduate students are mentored by faculty in applying for these small travel, research, and curriculum development grants.
